Group B Retrospective Takes Us Back To When Cars COULD Fly

Audi Sport Quattro. Lancia Delta S4. Porsche 959. Ford RS200. To fans of motorsport, these names are the stuff of legend. They take us back to a time when dinosaurs roamed the earth; shrieking, fire-breathing monsters that would gladly kill drivers and spectators if given half the chance. These, and others, were the cars of Group B rally racing, whose four year reign of terror ended after a tragedy-filled 1986 season. In that year alone, Joaquim Santos lost control of his Ford RS200 at Rally Portugal, killing three spectators and injuring thirty one others. A few months later, at Rally Corsica, Henri Toivonen and co-driver Sergio Cresto were killed in a fiery crash of their Lancia Delta S4. The FIA, the sport’s governing body had seen enough carnage, and Group B cars were banned from competition in the 1987 season.

The Smoking Tire Drives The STāSIS Engineering Audi V10 Spyder

Matt Farah drives a lot of really fast cars, so it’s safe to assume he’s pretty jaded when it comes to exotics and tuner cars. I’ve seen him smile in videos, and I may have even seen him laugh once or twice, but I’ve never seen him giggle like a schoolgirl. It’s equal parts cool and disturbing, and I know this much for certain: I need to get my hands on a Stasis Engineering Audi R8 V10, because I want to see if it does the same thing for me. I’m guessing the answer is “yes”.

Race Of Champions Carnage

As Heikke Kovalainen and Michèle Mouton demonstrate, you’re never too talented or too old to stack a race car, especially when something goes wrong. Kovalainen spent the 2010 season racing for Lotus in Formula One, after spending 2008 and 2009 as Lewis Hamilton’s teammate at McLaren Mercedes. It’s been a while since he’s had a winning season, and he was dicing Sebastian Loeb in one of the weekend’s Race of Champions events. Kovalainen’s throttle stuck, and you can see him smack the wall at about 0:55 into the video, just before the car veers straight into the retaining wall. Kovalainen suffered a concussion in the accident, which was severe enough to all but destroy the R8.

An Audi A4 That Gets 51 MPG? Ja, Bitte!

2011 Audi A4 Avant TDI

This is what a green car should look like.

This is one of those good news, bad news stories. If you live in Germany, congratulations: you’re about to get a 51 mile per gallon turbodiesel version of the Audi A4. Even better news is that it comes in either sedan or station wagon (“Avant”) flavor, which means you can haul your tuba to oompah band practice without any fuss. To put things in perspective, a gasoline engined A4 or A4 Avant gets around 25 miles per gallon with the four cylinder, gasoline powered turbo motor, so the TDI doubles your fuel economy.

Audi Celebrates quattro’s 30th Birthday

Audi quattro Concept

Audi has been kicking ass and taking names with the quattro all wheel drive system since its debut in 1980. It’s dominated the World Rally Championship, and the Group B Audi Sport Quattro was one of the reasons that Group B was eliminated from the WRC competition; the cars were simply too fast to be safe for drivers or spectators. In Touring Car competition, the quattro sedans proved so dominant that the FIA banned AWD cars from the series in 1998. Any company that can write racing history by changing the rules in two separate series demands respect, and Audi gets mine.

Nothing Good Will Come Of This: Audi Cam Will Stream Video Of Your Car Being Repaired

An Audi tech uses a Freenometer to check the salinity of the blinker fluid.

I’ve spent a good portion of my life turning wrenches, both professionally and as a hobby. I’ve finally come to the realization that there are jobs you do yourself, such as any aftermarket upgrades, brakes, oil changes, tune-ups and the like; then, there are jobs you pay others to do, like replacing a clutch or installing a new convertible soft top. Having been on both sides of the fence, as a mechanic and as a customer, I’m here to tell you that Audi’s latest idea, Audi Cam, is a really, really bad idea in a country that allows citizens to own hand guns.
